Primary Health Care

Primary health care should be the individual’s first contact with the health care system.  It serves as the connector between the hospital and the community.  On the island of Abu Dhabi, there are 9 primary health centers that have integrated services with Sheikh Khalifa Medical and Surgical Pavilions and form part of Sheikh Khalifa Medical City.

The primary health centers provide a variety of services.  These include diagnosis of acute illness, chronic disease management, appropriate screening, well baby visit and child and adult immunizations.  Nutrition services are provided and specialized medical services, such as a minor surgery and allergy testing, is provided by our Family Medicine consultants. Dental services are also provided and will be centralized in Zafra Clinic.

The aim of the primary health care system is to provide people with quality healthcare.  To deliver a high quality of care, the individual should have suitable access to care, continuity of care and care should be patient focused.  It should be provided by health care professionals who are continuous learners.  To achieve this, only the best qualified individuals are hired at the Primary Health Care Clinics.

Family Medicine is the core around which primary care is organized. Men and women study additional years after their internship and must pass specialty examinations before they receive their specialty certification.  General practitioners work along with family physicians in the primary health centers to provide medical care.
