Behavioral Sciences Pavilion Overview
The Behavioral Sciences Pavilion has been built following the instructions of the President His Highness Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan in 1985 following the "Heroin Epidemic" in the area and followed by the establishment of federal law no. 6 for control of narcotic substances and the like 1986. As a result of this successive visits by the W.H.O. experts (EMRO) were arranged. On 28 November 1994, Professor John Cooper conducted a workshop in Abu Dha
bi, which was attended by 60 people, almost all the Emirates and many Ministries in which the layout of the hospital was finally approved as a model purpose-built facility.
The Behavioral Sciences Pavilion is one of the most recent and modern psychiatry hospitals in the world. It is unique in that:
• It is located within Sheikh Khalifa Medical City supplied with various medical specialties and equipment like Sheikh Khalifa Medical Pavilion, Al-Jazeira Pavilion and Abu Dhabi Central Pavilion. Psychiatric patients can use all the ancillary services within their medical city (e.g. radiology and laboratory), thus giving the patients and their families the motivation for treatment, the hope for socialization and the sense of belonging to the community.
• The Behavioral Sciences Pavilion will function as a national resource centre for clinical work, teaching and research, with special emphasis on the integration of mental health services with other health services and multidisciplinary practice and teaching. This would promote liaison psychiatry where there would be mutual cooperation between general medical departments and our hospital. The hospital would have formal academic links with the academic department of Psychiatry of the School of Medicine and health services in Al Ain with full commitment to multidisciplinary teaching aimed at improving the standard of mental health care in all Emirates. Teaching programmers would be provided for both undergraduate and postgraduate medicine, nurses, social workers, psychologists and technical staff. Also the hospital has important educational roles such as:
• Scientific Lectures to Medical Staff and other specialties.
• Regular lecturers for patient's relatives in the day centre.
• Hosting scientific meetings like Psychiatric Division of Emirates
Medical Association.
